Researchers show how to build quantum operations from elementary gates

Adriano Barenco and colleagues prove that single-qubit operations and the controlled-NOT gate are enough to construct any reversible transformation of a quantum register. They also analyze how many elementary gates larger operations require.

Why it matters

The result gives hardware designers a small set of building blocks for general-purpose quantum computers and connects algorithms to executable circuits.
