Loss and DiVincenzo propose qubits made from single electron spins
Jan 8, 1997
Daniel Loss of the University of Basel and David DiVincenzo of IBM propose using the spin of single electrons trapped in quantum dots, tiny islands in a semiconductor, as qubits, with gates made by tuning the barrier between neighboring dots.
Why it matters
It made electron spins in quantum dots a candidate platform for quantum computing, and silicon spin-qubit efforts that hope to reuse chip manufacturing build on it.
