Viola and Lloyd propose rapid pulses to suppress a qubit's decoherence

Mar 20, 1998

Lorenza Viola and Seth Lloyd analyze a way to protect a qubit by repeatedly flipping its state with control pulses. In their model, pulses fast enough relative to environmental fluctuations can strongly suppress the loss of quantum coherence.

Why it matters

Dynamical decoupling offers a way to reduce noise before error correction is applied, helping quantum states survive between operations.
