Researchers demonstrate quantum error correction in the lab

Feb 6, 1998

David Cory and colleagues demonstrate quantum error correction using nuclear spins in molecules. A three-qubit code protects against phase errors, showing that fragile quantum information can be stabilized experimentally.

Why it matters

Error correction moves from theory to a laboratory demonstration, although this small NMR experiment does not provide a scalable, fault-tolerant computer.
