DLCZ proposes quantum repeaters using atomic ensembles and light

May 22, 2001

Lu-Ming Duan, Mikhail Lukin, Ignacio Cirac and Peter Zoller propose a long-distance communication scheme using atomic ensembles, beam splitters and single-photon detection. The protocol aims to overcome losses through intermediate quantum links.

Why it matters

The proposal gives quantum repeater research a concrete architecture based on collective atomic memories and optical measurements.
