Innsbruck implements the Cirac-Zoller gate between two ions

Mar 27, 2003

Ferdinand Schmidt-Kaler and colleagues at Innsbruck demonstrate a controlled-NOT gate between two individually addressed calcium ions. Their experiment implements the Cirac-Zoller proposal using shared ion motion.

Why it matters

The 1995 proposal becomes a gate between two separate ion qubits, extending the earlier demonstration that used internal and motional states of a single ion.
