Sergei Bravyi and Alexei Kitaev describe how to purify certain noisy auxiliary qubits into magic states. Combining these states with a restricted set of quantum operations enables universal quantum computation.
Why it matters
Magic-state distillation supplies operations that many error-correcting codes cannot implement directly, at the cost of extra qubits and processing.
