Eastin and Knill prove a limit on fault-tolerant quantum gates

Nov 26, 2008

Bryan Eastin and Emanuel Knill show that a quantum code detecting arbitrary errors on any one physical subsystem cannot support universal computation using only transversal gates, which avoid spreading errors within a code block.

Why it matters

Universal fault-tolerant computers need additional techniques beyond transversal gates, motivating resources such as specially prepared ancillary states.
