Researchers propose semiconductor wires as a platform for Majorana states

Roman Lutchyn, Jay Sau, and Sankar Das Sarma propose a semiconductor wire coupled to a superconductor as a way to detect Majorana states. A related proposal by Yuval Oreg, Gil Refael, and Felix von Oppen follows in March. Both are theoretical designs.

Why it matters

The proposals connect abstract Majorana models to semiconductor devices that could be tested in laboratories, advancing a route toward topological quantum computing.
