Lattice surgery offers a way to connect error-protected qubits

Dominic Horsman and colleagues propose lattice surgery: splitting and merging patches of a surface code to operate on protected qubits while keeping physical interactions local on a two-dimensional grid. This is an architectural proposal.

Why it matters

Connecting protected qubits with local interactions helps turn error-correcting memories into a design for a programmable computer.
