Oxford researchers test boson sampling on a photonic chip

Justin Spring and colleagues report a chip that sends three and four photons through an optical circuit and samples where they emerge. This small experiment tests boson sampling, a specialized computing task proposed as a route to quantum speedups.

Why it matters

Boson sampling offers a simpler experimental route to testing quantum advantage with light than building a universal quantum computer.
