Yale engineers photon loss to create a cat state in a resonator
Dec 15, 2014
Zaki Leghtas and colleagues engineer a superconducting resonator that exchanges photons in pairs with its environment. They observe a cat state emerge from vacuum before it loses its quantum coherence.
Why it matters
Carefully controlled photon loss helps shape quantum states, opening a way to store and protect quantum information in superconducting resonators.
