Google researchers propose random circuit sampling to show quantum supremacy

Jul 31, 2016

Sergio Boixo, John Martinis, Hartmut Neven and colleagues propose sampling the outputs of random quantum circuits as a test of quantum supremacy, and argue that the task must take exponential time on a classical computer.

Why it matters

This is the task Google's Sycamore chip ran in 2019 for its quantum supremacy claim, and it remains a common benchmark for new chips.
