IBM releases Qiskit, an open-source toolkit for programming quantum computers
Mar 7, 2017
IBM releases version 0.1 of Qiskit, an open-source software framework for writing programs for quantum computers, which IBM describes as the first of its kind. Jay Gambetta had published its first lines of code on GitHub four days earlier.
Why it matters
Free, open software lowered the barrier to writing quantum programs. IBM now calls Qiskit "the most popular software for useful quantum computing".
