China's Micius satellite links entangled photons across 1,200 km

Jun 15, 2017

Researchers use China's Micius satellite to send pairs of entangled photons to ground stations 1,203 km apart. Measurements show that their quantum connection survives the journey, extending the distance achieved in earlier experiments roughly tenfold.

Why it matters

Satellites offer a way to connect distant quantum networks without losing nearly all the photons in long optical fibers.
