ADAPT-VQE builds quantum chemistry circuits one operation at a time

Harper Grimsley and colleagues propose ADAPT-VQE, a variational algorithm that grows its trial quantum state according to the molecule being studied. Numerical simulations test this adaptive alternative to a fixed circuit design.

Why it matters

Tailoring the circuit to the molecule offers a way to improve chemical accuracy while limiting circuit depth on noisy hardware.
