Researchers identify vanishing training signals in quantum circuits

Mar 29, 2018

Jarrod McClean and colleagues show that, for a broad class of quantum circuits started with random settings, the signal guiding improvements shrinks rapidly as qubits are added. This can make training impractical, but does not rule out every algorithm that learns by adjusting circuit settings.

Why it matters

Algorithms that learn by adjusting quantum circuits need designs that preserve a useful training signal as the circuits grow.
