China links fiber and satellite key distribution across 4,600 km
Jan 6, 2021
Yu-Ao Chen and colleagues report an integrated network combining fiber and satellite quantum key distribution over a total span of 4,600 kilometers. The network relies on trusted relays, rather than end-to-end quantum repeaters.
Why it matters
Combining terrestrial and satellite links extends the reach of operational key distribution, while relay trust remains part of its security assumptions.
