Researchers bound the sampling cost of quantum error mitigation

Sep 9, 2021

Ryuji Takagi and colleagues derive limits on error mitigation. For a broad class of protocols under local depolarizing noise, the sampling overhead needed to guarantee accuracy grows exponentially with circuit depth.

Why it matters

Repeating noisy calculations and processing their outputs can become costly, constraining how far mitigation can extend useful circuit depth.
