Chinese team reports quantum advantage on its Zuchongzhi superconducting chip
Jun 2021
A USTC team led by Jian-Wei Pan reports that its 66-qubit Zuchongzhi processor ran a random circuit sampling task on 56 qubits in about 1.2 hours, a job it estimates would take the most powerful supercomputer at least 8 years. The paper later appeared in Physical Review Letters.
Why it matters
It showed that the kind of advantage experiment Google ran in 2019 could be repeated by an independent team, at a scale the authors estimate is 100 to 1,000 times harder to simulate.
