A classical attack breaks the post-quantum candidate SIKE

Jul 30, 2022

Wouter Castryck and Thomas Decru publish an efficient key-recovery attack on SIDH, the protocol underlying SIKE. They demonstrate a classical implementation against SIKEp434, undermining a candidate in NIST's post-quantum selection process.

Why it matters

Algorithms intended to resist quantum attacks must also withstand classical cryptanalysis; the result removes a proposed option for securing future communications.
