Google shows a larger error-correcting code can make fewer errors

Jul 13, 2022

Google Quantum AI reports that a logical qubit (an error-protected qubit built from many physical ones) using 49 physical qubits made slightly fewer errors than the average of smaller codes using 17. Google says no quantum computing platform had shown this before.

Why it matters

Error correction only helps if adding qubits to a code lowers the error rate; this experiment showed that trend on real hardware, although the improvement was small.
