A neutral-atom proposal makes errors easier to locate

Jan 10, 2022

Yue Wu and colleagues propose encoding ytterbium qubits so that dominant gate errors become detectable erasures, errors with known locations. Simulations suggest this could let a surface code tolerate higher physical error rates.

Why it matters

Knowing where an error occurred makes correction easier and could reduce the hardware demands of fault-tolerant computing.
