Google's AlphaQubit improves error decoding on quantum-processor data

Google's AlphaQubit neural network decodes errors more accurately than comparison methods on Sycamore data from distance-3 and distance-5 surface codes. Larger codes are tested in simulation; the decoder is still too slow for real-time superconducting error correction.

Why it matters

Learning the hardware's error patterns can improve decoding, but practical error correction also requires decisions fast enough to keep up with the processor.
