DARPA selects companies for the first stage of its Quantum Benchmarking Initiative
Apr 3, 2025
DARPA says nearly 20 companies, including IonQ, Quantinuum, Rigetti and Xanadu, will enter Stage A of its Quantum Benchmarking Initiative, which aims to verify whether any approach can reach utility-scale quantum computing, where value exceeds cost, by 2033.
Why it matters
It is a government effort to check, company by company, whether useful fault-tolerant quantum computers are possible within a decade, instead of taking company roadmaps at face value.
