Google reports "Quantum Echoes", which it calls the first verifiable quantum advantage
Oct 22, 2025
Google Quantum AI reported in Nature that its Willow chip measured a subtle "echo" signal on 65 qubits about 13,000 times faster than the Frontier supercomputer would need, by the authors' estimate. Google calls it verifiable because another quantum computer of similar quality could repeat the result.
Why it matters
Earlier advantage demos used random tasks with no use; Google pitches this as a step toward useful jobs such as learning molecular structure, though its molecule tests are not yet beyond classical.

Observation of constructive interference at the edge of quantum ergodicity
“This is a factor of approximately 13,000 longer than the experimental data collection time of 2.1 h per circuit, indicating that this experiment is, at present, in the beyond-classical regime of quantum computation.”

Our Quantum Echoes algorithm is a big step toward real-world applications for quantum computing
“Just published in Nature, we have demonstrated the first-ever verifiable quantum advantage running the out-of-order time correlator (OTOC) algorithm, which we call Quantum Echoes.”

Google’s New Quantum Algorithm May Actually Be Useful
“When the team executed the algorithm on 65 of Willow’s qubits, it performed roughly 13,000 times as fast as the algorithm’s best classical counterpart running on Frontier.”

Google claims ‘quantum advantage’ again — but researchers are sceptical
“Google researchers have made a fresh claim of quantum advantage — the ability of quantum computers to radically speed up calculations compared with their classical counterparts.”
