IBM unveils its Nighthawk and Loon processors and backs a quantum advantage tracker
Nov 12, 2025
IBM announced Nighthawk, a 120-qubit processor with more links between qubits that it says is built to reach quantum advantage by the end of 2026, and Loon, an experimental chip it says contains all the key parts for its planned fault-tolerant machines. It also joined partners in an open tracker of advantage claims.
Why it matters
IBM targets a large fault-tolerant computer by 2029; the community tracker lets outsiders test claims of quantum advantage against the best classical methods instead of taking them on trust.
