Xanadu networks four server racks into a modular photonic quantum computer

Jan 22, 2025

Canada's Xanadu reports in Nature a small scale model of a photonic quantum computer, Aurora, built from 35 photonic chips in server racks linked by optical fiber. Its parts do not yet perform well enough for useful work, but it combines every basic function a universal machine needs.

Why it matters

It tests whether a photonic machine can grow by networking identical racks; its components must still improve before such systems can correct their own errors.
