Google Quantum AI adds neutral atoms alongside its superconducting qubits
Mar 24, 2026
On March 24, 2026, Google Quantum AI said it is expanding beyond superconducting chips to also build neutral-atom quantum computers, which use individual atoms as qubits. Physicist Adam Kaufman joined Google to lead the new hardware team in Boulder, Colorado.
Why it matters
Google had built its program around superconducting chips such as Willow. Backing a second qubit technology hedges its bets on which approach will reach large, error-corrected machines first.
