Japan switches on Shunkai, its first full-stack neutral-atom quantum computer

Aug 24, 2026

On Aug. 24, 2026, Japan's Institute for Molecular Science said Shunkai, a quantum computer built from single atoms held by lasers, is operational. It starts with about 50 qubits and will grow to about 500. Infleqtion supplied the processor and Hitachi the software.

Why it matters

It gives Japan a home-built machine on one of the fastest-growing qubit types, meant for testing error correction on the way to a 10,000-qubit fault-tolerant system planned for 2031.
