NIST finalizes its plan for retiring quantum-vulnerable encryption
Oct 27, 2026
NIST releases the final version of NIST IR 8547, "Transition to Post-Quantum Cryptography Standards". It lists which of its current encryption and signature algorithms a quantum computer could break and sets out how they will be phased out in favor of the post-quantum standards NIST published in 2024.
Why it matters
It turns the move to post-quantum cryptography into a schedule that federal agencies and the companies that work with them can plan around, in line with U.S. deadlines of 2030 to 2035.
