A five-qubit code protects quantum information against any single-qubit error

Feb 27, 1996

Raymond Laflamme and colleagues describe a code that spreads one qubit of information across five physical qubits and corrects an arbitrary error on any one of them. Five is the minimum number needed for this protection.

Why it matters

The code establishes how compact full protection against a single-qubit error can be, providing a target for early error-correction experiments.
