Anders Sørensen and Klaus Mølmer propose laser-driven quantum gates that link trapped ions through their shared motion. Their method relaxes the need to cool that motion to its lowest quantum state.

Why it matters

Making gates less sensitive to ion motion eases a demanding cooling requirement for trapped-ion computers.
