Controlled collisions entangle atoms in an optical lattice

Aug 14, 2003

Olaf Mandel and colleagues make neighboring neutral atoms collide in a lattice of laser light. These controlled interactions act as many quantum gates at once, creating entanglement between atoms and then undoing it.

Why it matters

The experiment turns the earlier collisional gate proposal into an experimental route for manipulating many neutral atoms together.
