NIST corrects quantum errors using three trapped ions

Dec 2, 2004

John Chiaverini and colleagues at NIST encode one quantum bit across three beryllium ions. They introduce spin-flip errors, measure two of the ions and use the results to correct the state of the remaining ion.

Why it matters

Error correction with measurements and feedback brings the technique to trapped ions, a platform designed to support larger quantum computers.
