Delft researchers control a single electron spin as a quantum bit

Aug 17, 2006

Researchers at TU Delft use short bursts of a magnetic field to control the spin of a single electron in a quantum dot, a tiny semiconductor trap. They observe repeated, controlled changes in the spin's quantum state.

Why it matters

Controlling an individual electron supplies a key operation for quantum computers that encode information in semiconductor spins.
