Color codes offer a way to protect and process quantum information

Hector Bombin and Miguel Angel Martin-Delgado introduce topological error-correcting codes now known as color codes. The construction supports the full Clifford group, an important family of quantum operations, without individually addressing qubits.

Why it matters

The work provides an alternative to surface codes for processing protected quantum information and using magic states.
