David Moehring and colleagues entangle two individual trapped-ion memories separated by a meter. Interference and detection of photons emitted by the ions signal when the probabilistic procedure succeeds.
Why it matters
Linking stationary qubits through light is a building block for quantum networks and computers assembled from separate modules.
