Aaronson and Arkhipov propose boson sampling as a quantum computing test

Nov 14, 2010

Scott Aaronson and Alex Arkhipov analyze sampling the outputs of identical photons passing through a linear optical network. Under stated complexity assumptions, such sampling would be hard for classical computers, even without a universal quantum processor.

Why it matters

Boson sampling defines a specialized task for testing quantum computational advantage, later pursued in photonic experiments.
