Micius distributes quantum keys from orbit to the ground

Sheng-Kai Liao and colleagues demonstrate decoy-state quantum key distribution from the Micius satellite to ground stations over distances up to 1,200 kilometers. This is a key-distribution link, distinct from the satellite's entanglement experiments.

Why it matters

Satellite links offer a way to extend key distribution beyond the distances practical for direct transmission through optical fiber.
