ETH Zurich demonstrates repeated surface-code error correction

Dec 7, 2021

An ETH Zurich-led team uses 17 superconducting qubits to repeatedly detect both bit and phase errors in a surface code that protects one logical qubit. Corrections are applied to the recorded results in postprocessing.

Why it matters

Repeatedly handling both kinds of error is a necessary step toward surface-code memories that can reliably preserve quantum information.
