Germany's first quantum computer, an IBM system, goes into operation near Stuttgart

Jun 15, 2021

An IBM Quantum System One goes into operation in Ehningen, Germany, run by the Fraunhofer Society for researchers from industry and science. The German government calls it the country's first quantum computer and the first of its kind in Europe.

Why it matters

Giving German researchers hands-on access to a working machine was an early step in turning public quantum funding into applications, even though the hardware itself was built by IBM.
