A trapped-ion experiment certifies quantum keys through a Bell test

David Nadlinger and colleagues generate keys using two optically linked ions and certify security through Bell-test statistics. The experiment relies on quantum theory and preventing information leakage; measurements are not space-like separated.
Why it matters
The demonstration reduces the need to trust a detailed device model, bringing device-independent cryptography into an experimental setting.
