NIST researchers entangle four trapped ions
Mar 16, 2000
Charles Sackett and colleagues at NIST report entangled states of four trapped ions. A single laser pulse creates the entanglement through the ions' shared motion, using a method that can in principle extend to larger groups.
Why it matters
Entangling several matter qubits together advances the control needed for quantum algorithms and error-correcting codes beyond two-qubit demonstrations.
