Delft researchers electrically read an individual electron spin

Jul 22, 2004

Jeroen Elzerman and colleagues measure the spin state of a single electron in a semiconductor quantum dot in one measurement cycle. They turn spin information into a detectable change in electrical charge.

Why it matters

Reading individual spin states provides an essential part of a quantum computer built from semiconductor quantum dots.
