Two teams use Rydberg blockade to link pairs of atoms
Jul 31, 2009
Using Rydberg blockade, where exciting one atom changes how another responds, Isenhower and colleagues demonstrate a controlled-NOT gate. Wilk and colleagues entangle two atoms with 75% fidelity among surviving pairs, but about 4 in 10 pairs are lost.
Why it matters
These experiments turn the proposed Rydberg interaction into two-atom quantum logic and entanglement, basic tools for programmable neutral-atom computers.
