Nuclear spins in a crystal retain coherence for six hours

Jan 7, 2015

Manjin Zhong and colleagues report nuclear-spin coherence lasting 370 ± 60 minutes at 2 kelvin in a europium-doped crystal. Repeated control pulses suppress decoherence, extending the lifetime of a potential storage medium for quantum memories.

Why it matters

Long-lived nuclear spins could help quantum memories preserve states while distant network links are established.
